Popular in Europe, health-and-beauty supplements are still eyed with a certain amount of mistrust in North America. “You are what you eat” is a cliché, but co-exists with the dismissive “so little of what you eat actually reaches your skin.” Well, I can tell when sugar reaches my skin. Or when water doesn’t because I’m not drinking it. After a long stretch of careless diet habits, I’ve seen how just a week of healthy eating makes a discernable complexion difference. And I notice improvements in my skin when I add good-skin supplements to my routine.

Newest in my supplement cupboard is GliSODin Skin Nutrients, which spins on a melon extract rich in natural, powerfully antioxidant enzymes called superoxide dismutase, which clinical studies suggest protect against environmental assault and premature aging. The body also makes its own SOD, but true to form, slows production as we age (sheesh).

When taken orally, SOD doesn’t make it past the digestive stage, so GliSODin encapsulated it in a wheat protein that withstands stomach acids and digestive enzymes until the body can absorb it. The all-natural formulations also include therapeutic doses (specific amounts clinically proven to have a measurable effect) of other healthy-skin ingredients such as krill oil, which has anti-oxidant properties and high levels of omega-3s which reduce inflammation and increase hydration; hyaluronic acid which boosts moisture levels and thus firmness; lycopene, which helps repair UV damage; cacao bean, a potent antioxidant which improves skin’s circulation; and sea buckthorn berry oil, which contains vitamins, minerals and cartenoids to enhance clarity and resiliance. Hair and nails benefit too — and one test subject even reported improvement of glaucoma symptoms after three months.

The range includes an Advanced Detoxification Formula ($125/30 sachets), which encourages the body through a stress-free skin-clearing cleanse; Advanced Daily Formula ($95/month), which smooths, calms and rejuvenates the complexion; Advanced Skin Brightening Formula ($80/month), which helps even out skin tone and temper sun damage; and a dual-phase Advanced Pre/Post Formula Kit that boosts healing after cosmetic procedures ($150/phase).

I’ve just finished a month of GliSODin Advanced Daily Formula and am pleased to see my skin looking as though I’m getting enough sleep, water and vitamin-rich nutrition. I’m starting to help by making better food choices — lifestyle support means a bigger bang for the supplement buck — so I expect to see even better results at the end of month two, especially with exercise back in the mix (really, I swear, honest).

Oh, the made-in-Canada connection? Ontario native Corina Crysler, who formulated the line. A nutritionist with a BSc in food chemistry, she’s the exec director of Isocell North America Inc., the North-American arm of the company that makes GliSODin.

I tried the Detox ones for a week and I think….THINK… they made a different with my skin (less breakouts… breakouts being a sign of a clogged liver). I forgot them at my parents’ house though, so haven’t finished the pack yet… oops.

We should all be more conscious of our diets and the preparations we put on our skin-the largest organ of the body. Everything you put on your skin is absorbed into our bodies….and now the newest cutting-edge nutricosmetics are using this fact to our advantage.

We will see more of this technology real soon.

I wear a skin patch for pain control and it gives me 24/7 relief.
A friend is now taking her hormone replacement via the skin route and it works great she tells me.

This product along with some great skin care should put us where we need to be – healthy with glowing skin.

I tried the detox and definitely felt it work by the end of week 1. it could have been the fact that i followed the diet plan to the T and made sure i had lots of water.

following that i went on the Advanced Skin Brightening Formula which has done wonders for me. Esp. Hair: i used to shed hair and it has been instrumental in stopping breakage and hair loss. i don’t think i am getting the ones that i lost back but its enough for now that i am not losing anymore hair!

I used the Advanced Brightening one, and I was not that pleased. I didn’t really think that my skin did much of anything from it. I spent $80.00 on them.

But.. I am will stay positive because I have less than a week left. They seem to have good studies behind their products though.
